Casper Mattress Review Outline

We have plenty to say about the Casper Mattress, as it’s one of the most popular online bed-in-a-box brands on the internet. You might’ve even seen a Costco Casper mattress or walked past the brand’s products in your local Target. Casper is partly responsible for bringing online mattress shopping to the mainstream. They offer three different beds, but this Casper Mattress review will focus on their flagship bed. Our mattress reviews tend to be lengthy, so in order to make it quick for you to get where you want to go, below is a list of jump links to take you to any section of this review.

Casper Mattress Firmness And Feel
In terms of firmness, we say the Casper is a medium on our scale. That’s precisely in the middle of the soft-to-firm spectrum.

Though, you should always remember that your body type will affect how you experience the firmness of a mattress. In simple terms, the heavier you are, the softer it will feel and vice versa.

Soft Foam Feel

The Casper mattress has a soft foam feel. Even though it does incorporate a layer of memory foam, you aren’t going to get an overt memory foam feel. You aren’t going to feel like you’re sinking into the mattress or getting “stuck in the mud.”

For some folks, that’s great because they don’t like the feeling of being sucked into the mattress. For other folks, that may be disappointing because they enjoy that stereotypical memory foam feel.

Responsiveness

With all-foam beds, we often find that the responsiveness is on the slower side because the mattress doesn’t have any coils to assist with the bounce-back. The Casper, however, responds relatively quickly #42cb75to pressure despite being all-foam. People who switch positions during the night won’t have any trouble turning over and won’t leave a sunken spot behind when they do.

Casper Mattress Design And Construction
The Original Casper Mattress is an all-foam bed, the construction of which is fairly simple. It’s three layers of foam materials:
Casper now has a three layer, 11″ construction
  • Support foam – This is the base layer that creates the support system for the mattress.
  • Memory foam – The middle layer is a zoned layer of memory foam, which means there are more supportive pieces in certain targeted areas, like the middle section where a sleeper’s hips and trunk would be. The Casper Wave Hybrid mattress has a zoned support framework as well.
  • Open-cell foam– This top layer is perforated to pull in airflow (Casper calls this AirScape).

Altogether, you get ~11” of memory, poly, and proprietary foam. Casper’s proprietary foam contributes to the overall soft neutral-foam feel of the bed.

All of the foams in the Casper mattress are approved by the CertiPUR-US program, which means they have low VOC, are made without ozone depleters and are not harmful to you or the environment.

“Zoned” layers are becoming more popular in the industry. If a layer is described as “zoned”, that means it’s more supportive in certain targeted areas, like the middle section where a sleeper’s hips and trunk would be. The Casper Wave Hybrid mattress has a zoned support framework as well, albeit it’s more much advanced.

The memory foam in the middle is the “Zoned Support” layer
Casper Mattress Cover
The cover on the Original Casper mattress is a nice, soft material made up of recycled polyester, polyester, upcycled cotton, rayon, and lycra. It’s also fitted well so that it won’t bunch up under your sheets. We think the cover is easy to remove, but we don’t suggest putting it through the washing machine. Just because it’s removable doesn’t mean it’s machine washable.
Casper has a space-age looking cover

If you do need to deal with a spill or stain, you can spot clean it. In the case that you’re especially concerned about getting a thorough clean—like if you suffer from awful allergies that require bi-weekly deep cleans of all your linens—you can add a mattress protector, like one of these from Amazon. Just know that, depending on the thickness and material of the protector, it may stifle airflow through the mattress and might affect the surface feel a bit.

You might want to rotate the mattress 180° every 3-6 months or so if you share your bed with a partner whose body weight is significantly different than your own. Rotating the bed will help the mattress wear more evenly over time.

Is Casper A Good Mattress For Couples?
If you sleep alone, you likely don’t have to worry about edge support or motion isolation. For those of you who co-sleep, on the other hand, check out how Casper performed in these categories!
Edge support
Edge support is only worth paying attention to if you sleep with a partner

We do think Casper is a good pick for couples. For one, this bed has decent edge support, meaning you aren’t going to get too much of that roll-off feeling if you happen to find yourself near the edge of the mattress.

Motion transfer
Casper also performs well in terms of motion isolation. All-foam beds generally do a good job of limiting cross-bed motion, and the Casper bed is no exception to that.
Temperature Regulation

In our opinion, the Casper bed does not sleep hot, but it doesn’t sleep cool either. This bed is what we call temperature neutral, which is the case for most beds you can buy online. The new AirScape design on the comfort foam does help with airflow, but not enough to call it a cooling bed.

Even so, for most people, we think Casper will be fine in the temperature-regulation department. We can’t imagine many people complaining about overheating on the Original Casper mattress.

Casper Mattress Sleeper Type Analysis

SLEEP POSITION

Side Sleepers

Most side sleepers should feel comfortable on this mattress, with the exception of more petite people. Because petite people don’t sink into the mattress much, side sleepers who are petite might find this mattress too firm.

Back And Stomach Sleepers

We’ve found that even though Casper isn’t a particularly firm bed, the combination of various foam densities and its zoned design make it more supportive than you might expect.

Combo Sleepers

Because the bed isn’t overly firm and the mattress is essentially split into different zones, these types of sleepers will get the pressure they need for key areas.

Body Type Analysis
Petite To Average Individuals
We think the Original Casper is a nice bed for individuals who weigh under 225 pounds. Petite body types are going to get enough support on this bed and think it’s around a medium-firm, while average body types will find it provides a nice balance between support and pressure relief. It’s one of those beds that most people agree is comfortable
Heavy Individuals
If you’re larger in stature (~225+ pounds), we’d recommend upgrading to the Casper Hybrid mattress. As we stated earlier, because the Casper Hybrid uses coils, it’s the more supportive option for heavier people. Folks who fall into this size category exert much more pressure and force on mattresses compared to smaller size individuals, so it’s crucial they receive additional support.
Casper Mattress Pricing
Casper beds are not considered cheap, but they’re certainly not the most expensive beds on the market either. They’re fairly priced, and we would consider the bed a decent value, all things considered. You can see a breakdown of the pricing below:
SIZEPRICE (MSRP)
Twin$595
Twin XL$695
Full$995
Queen$1,095
King / Cal King$1,295
Is There A Casper Mattress Discount Code?
We always do our best to get discounts and promo codes for you, so if we’ve got a Casper code, it’ll be in that little green box floating on your screen. Alternatively, you can always check Casper.com for current offers and promotions. Like most brands, Casper tends to offer its largest promotions during major holidays, but it usually offers something like $50-$100 off year-round as well.

OVERALL PRICE RATING$$$How we rate mattresses
Ultimately, we really like the Original Casper. Simply put, there’s a reason why it’s so popular. Part of that is good advertising, true, but it’s also because it’s a quality, accommodating product. It has a feel almost no one can stick their nose up to you, as it’s not as divisive as memory foam can be. It’s also suitable for any sleeper position thanks to its medium firmness level. If you weigh under ~230 lbs and want a “safe pick” that won’t break the bank, Casper is a great option.
Casper Bed Ratings
  • Casper mattress reviews on Amazon: Most Casper reviews have more than four out of five stars on Amazon, and customers say the mattresses are great for neck and back pain.
  • Casper mattress reviews on Reddit: Reviews of Casper mattress on Reddit reveal that the mattresses can take a while to get used to, but they’re comfortable after an initial adjustment period.

Other Casper Mattress Models
Do you like the idea of Casper but want to compare options? Here is a quick comparison of the different Casper models.
Casper Wave

This is the high-end mattress that also has the Zoned Support System but to a larger extent. The Wave is thicker and feels a little more buoyant compared to the original mattress since it has a layer of latex foam. This the mattress that Casper created for people with back pain or other health issues. It costs more than the original mattress, but if you’re not on a strict budget, it might be worth your consideration. It’s basically the older brother to the original mattress. Check out our Casper Wave vs. Casper comparison.

Casper Nova Hybrid

This is the company’s softest mattress on the market right now. Here’s a link to our Casper Nova vs. Casper comparison.

Casper Element

To compete with lower price point cheap beds, Casper Sleep launched the Element. It’s the simplest (and most affordable) mattress Casper sells. It feels similar to the original in that it’s neutral and comfortable, but there’s not a true signature feel. This is the mattress for guest rooms, college students, kids, teens, etc. There’s plenty of good things to say about the Casper Element mattress, but the best part (at least when compared to the other two) is the price.

Casper Hybrid Mattress
This is almost the exact same bed as the Original Casper mattress but with support coils rather than support foam. We like the bed a lot, and it retails for about $200 more than the all-foam Casper. We’d recommend this bed to folks who want the Casper feel with some additional support and durability.

Casper Company Policies
The online mattress industry is established enough now that it has some pretty standard policies regarding shipping, returns, trials, and the like. You will recieve:

  • Free shipping and returns
  • A 100-night risk-free trial period
  • 10-year warranty

Once you’ve removed the packaging and your bed starts to decompress, it’s a good idea to let it sit out for about a full day. This allows it adequate time to fully decompress and off-gas.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Casper a good mattress?

Casper is a quality all-foam mattress great for all sleeper types under 230 lbs, especially combination sleepers. It also has a comfortable, neutral-foam feel that most people seem to really enjoy.

Will side sleepers like the Casper mattress?
Yes! We fully expect that most side sleepers will like Casper. As we note in our Casper mattress review, it’s not too soft or too firm.
Will Casper set up my mattress for me? Will they take away my old one?
In-home setup is not a standard part of Casper’s policies, but it does have some “In-Home Delivery & Setup” markets, which basically means white glove delivery is in some areas upon request. If you live in one of those market areas and opt for an in-home setup, the workers will also remove your old mattress.
Do I need a box spring for my Casper mattress?
No, you don’t need a box spring for your Casper bed, or most online mattresses for that matter. Instead, we recommend metal or wood-slatted bed frame, or a flat mattress foundation.
How much does a Casper mattress cost?
Casper is priced averagely compared to other online beds. A queen-size bed retails for $1,095, but you can usually get your hands on one for 10-15% off.
What is the “Zoned Support” technology?
A simple explanation of the “Zoned Support” system is that the center of the bed is firmer/more supportive and the top and bottom are more pressure relieving.
How did the Slumber Yard get the Casper mattress?
We were sent this mattress from Casper to review it. However, we did not accept any monetary payment from Casper (or any other company) to say good or bad things about this mattress.
